Discover the Aosta Valley local crafts
Spending a summer vacation between the Aosta Valley mountains, it could be interesting to discover and visit the small craft fairs that enliven many villages right in the summer period.
For example, in August, along the roads of the Aosta old town centre takes place the Foire d’Eté (Summer Fair), a sort of summer version of the more famous Sant’Orso Fair (a winter event not to be missed!).
Local crafts have many expressions (agricultural tools, objects for domestic use, furniture, decorative panels, statues…), but the most representative and evocative products are certainly the Grolla and the Friendship Cup.
The Grolla is a wine goblet with lid, carved from a single block of maple or nut-tree wood. The word Grolla comes from “graal”, which in Old French means exactly goblet. Symbol of friendship and fraternity, in the past the Grolla was used during special occasions to drink the wine “à la ronde”, that is in the round, passing the goblet in turn. Today the Grolla has a decorative and symbolic value and is often used as a representative gift or souvenir of the Valley.
The Friendship Cup (in the photo) is shorter and pot-bellied with lid and various “nozzles”. Carved from wood, it can be tastefully decorated thanks to the skill of the craftsman. The Friendship Cup keeps a convivial use, in fact into the cup is still served the traditional Aosta Valley coffee: a hot drink which is perfect for enjoying a funny evening with friends or warming up a cold day on mountain.
